Thanks to the hit British TV show, parents are more aware than ever of the importance of discipline in their child's life. Many parents wish they could have a super nanny sweep in and train their children. But few parents think of themselves as 'super nanny' material. However, this is exactly what they are. Discipline is one of a parent's responsibilities; you might say it comes with the job description. But being a super nanny is hard for most parents, for two reasons.

First of all, we live in an age where we seldom deny ourselves anything if we can help it. Giving the child their way too often seems a small price to pay for a few minutes of peace and quiet, and too often parents give in in the short term--not realizing that they're only making things worse down the road. On a similar note, when children look as though we're depriving them of something through our discipline, it's far too easy to let our super nanny ideals go out the window, and give them what they want. But it's important to remember that when we do that, we're only raising up another generation of kids who won't know how to say no, and who won't know how to cope when they get out into the Real World and find that whining won't always get them what they want.

The second reason few parents have the super nanny courage to discipline their children is that too often, they don't know how. When they do discipline, they're likely to do it wrong; the child's behavior doesn't improve, and the parent feels worse than before. It's important to remember that consistency is the key when it comes to discipline; the same offense must be punished the same way, and it must be punished immediately, not later or "when Daddy comes home." With consistency and courage, even the most timid and overwhelmed of parents can be transformed into a super nanny of her own.
